Doing What You Love

“You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

Part of a commencement speech from Jim Carrey (see below for a 1 minute video worth every second), these words resonated with me in a profound way, as did the entirety of his message. As someone who was taught to be realistic…and practical…and smart, I was never much of a risk-taker. I graduated from high school, continued on to college, and went on to graduate school more than once. I got a “stable” job with benefits and set about on the business of living my life. And I wasn’t miserable, unlike so many people I knew, so I assumed I was doing pretty well in life.

But I knew. On a level beyond what was on the surface, I knew that there was more in the cards for me. I knew that the little voice inside me that was saying “Becky…is this REALLY it? Is THIS your life? Forever?” was on to something. But if I’m being completely honest, I wasn’t exactly sure what the voice was telling me to do, and I was TERRIFIED to actually do it. Because I was smart…and practical…and realistic, so the idea that I should take a leap of faith wasn’t exactly how I was wired. Thankfully, the universe stepped in, and through a series of events far too extended to get into here, I ended up taking that leap of faith. I enrolled in a program to begin working toward my formal coaching certification, and I founded Higher Good Coaching.

It hasn’t been easy. There have been challenges…and doubts…and fears…and insecurities. And I often feel far from “practical and realistic.” But I DO feel like I am taking a chance and pursuing what I love. And THAT is an extraordinary feeling.

I’d love to hear about what it is YOU would love to be doing with your life, either professionally OR personally. Drop me a note at Becky@highergoodcoaching.com and share what YOU love!
